The Naming Committee presenting to thje ESD School Board

At its most recent board meeting, the Enumclaw School District Board of Directors unanimously selected Evergreen Elementary School as the name for the district’s new elementary school in the Ten Trails community in Black Diamond. The Board also selected Trailblazers as the school mascot.

The new school, referred to as Elementary #6 during planning and construction, will serve students and families in the growing Ten Trails area while becoming part of the broader Enumclaw School District community.

The name was recommended by the Elementary #6 Naming Committee following a multi-step process guided by Board Policy 6970. Under the policy, a committee composed of members of the new school community and primary users of the facility is responsible for recommending a prioritized list of three possible names and a rationale to the Board, with the Board making the final selection.

The committee began its work by gathering broad community input and feedback from future students and families. A districtwide community survey launched on February 23 and closed on March 20, receiving 201 responses. A second survey was shared with Ten Trails families and community members, receiving 271 responses.

Throughout the process, committee members used a set of guiding filters to evaluate possible names and mascots. These included building a cohesive community across the district, representing the school’s location in Ten Trails, honoring the area’s natural surroundings and history, creating an identity and a memorable sense of place, considering future school naming, and identifying a kid-friendly mascot.

The committee also partnered with the Black Diamond Historical Museum to better understand local history and context. The process emphasized thoughtful consideration of the area’s past, present and future, including opportunities for future partnerships and learning connected to the Muckleshoot Tribe and the natural environment surrounding the school site.

Evergreen Elementary was the committee’s top recommendation. The name was selected because of its strong connection to nature, its relationship to the wetlands and trees behind the school site, and its ability to reflect both the Ten Trails location and the greater Enumclaw School District community. The committee also noted that the name provides future learning opportunities for students related to local nature and stewardship.

The committee’s final three name recommendations were:

  1. Evergreen Elementary School

  2. Ten Trails Elementary School

  3. Northwood Elementary School

For the mascot, the committee unanimously recommended Trailblazers, describing the mascot as a strong fit for a new school community focused on growth, belonging, stewardship, learning, helping and problem-solving. The committee also identified the elk as a representation of the mascot because of its strong connection to the community, kid-friendly appeal and based on community input.

With the Board’s unanimous selection, Evergreen Elementary School now has a name and mascot that reflect the community's voice, local history, nature, and the opportunity to build a strong school identity for future students and families.
