In the Spring 2023 Science Laboratory Safety Audit conducted by the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD), Enumclaw High School, Enumclaw Middle School, and Thunder Mountain Middle Schools proudly achieved a perfect score of 100%. This outstanding accomplishment is largely credited to Teresa Harberg, the Science Lab Technician at EHS.

The PSESD and the Enumclaw School District have a comprehensive Science Laboratory Safety Audit Checklist comprising 33 items. Teresa’s meticulous preparation for this audit is continual and ongoing; she reviews the checklist weekly at EHS and periodically at each middle school. Despite the middle schools lacking dedicated science labs and housing fewer chemicals, Teresa ensures that the schools meet the required safety standards.

At EHS, the Science Laboratory chemical inventory boasts nearly 200 different items, along with 12 animal parts designated for dissection. Managing such a diverse and potentially hazardous inventory requires exceptional attention to detail and expertise.

Teresa's journey in education began as a paraeducator in the Orting School District. Three years ago, she joined the District as a Contact Tracer. After one year, she transitioned into her current role at EHS, including the additional responsibility as the Enumclaw School District Chemical Hygiene Officer.

When asked about her favorite job aspect, Teresa enthusiastically said, “My favorite part of my job is getting to work with students as they are doing science experiments in the lab.” Her passion for learning and commitment to safety shines through in her interactions with both students and staff.

The value of Teresa’s dedication to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment does not go unnoticed. “I feel like my role of keeping lab safety a priority is appreciated by students and teachers,” she remarked.

The next Science Laboratory Safety Audit is scheduled for 2025, where PSESD will once again assess the safety standards across the District’s secondary schools. With Teresa at the helm, Enumclaw High School is well-positioned to maintain its exemplary safety record.
